THE E-NEWSLETTER THAT NEEDS A NAME - Volume 2, No. 1
August 7, 2002

TIME FOR A VOTE: THE TOP TEN NAME SUGGESTIONS

When we asked for name suggestions for this E-newsletter, WOW! did you come through! We're pleased that 360 alumni submitted a total of 568 names! We had a great time reading them. Here are a few that DIDN'T make the cut (but we appreciated them nonetheless!):

"Illinois State Reggister"
- Clever!
"Another Dose of Normal"
- "Dose"? What, your college experience was like medicine?
"The Vidette for the old and infirm"
- Hmm..... Well, unfortunately we thought some younger alumni might take offense to that one.
"Redbird Rantings"
- Uh. . . doesn't that sound a bit violent?

Two names we thought were hilarious, but we did wonder what you were saying about the quality of our content:

"Givin' You the Bird" and "Bird Droppings"

Still, the one submission that most cracked up the staff was from the alum who, when asked what we should name the newsletter, suggested simply:

"Bob"

Hey, it is a name! Thanks, Joe, for that laugh. Now, for the TOP TEN, culled from the long list by the Alumni Services staff and the alumni volunteers of the Alumni Association's Communications Committee:
(in alphabetical order)

The Beakon
Bird Bits
The Bird Feeder
'Birds On The Wire
The Birdword
Illinois State E-lumni NewsNews from the Nest
Redbird Reader
Redbird Review
ReggiE - News

Vote for your favorite today! One vote per alum, please, by replying to this message or E-mailing BY SEPTEMBER 1ST!

We'll announce the winner in the next issue, scheduled for September.
After that, the E-newsletter will become bi-monthly (every other month) as long as there's news to send you!

OUR NAMING SUGGESTION SWEATSHIRT WINNER IS. . . .
We promised that each alum who submitted a name would be entered in a drawing for a free Illinois State sweatshirt. And you were. With a little help from our student assistant Melinda, who cut all the names into slips and then, under staff supervision, drew one out, the winner is
JENNY (ZAESKE) ANDERSON '95, of McHenry, Illinois. Congratulations,
Jenny! And thanks to ALL of you for the name suggestions.

BUDGET CUTS AT ILLINOIS STATE
(Information provided by Illinois State University Media Relations)

You let us know after the first E-newsletter that you'd like to hear news of what's happening at Illinois State in general. Unfortunately, there's no more significant story these days than the budget woes ISU is experiencing, as are most universities around the country.

After several rounds of budget rescissions and cuts over the past year, Illinois State will start FY2003 with $8.7 million less than at the beginning of FY2002. President Victor Boschini has worked with all areas of campus, the Board of Trustees and our local and statewide legislative leaders to lessen the impact of this budget crisis. So far, the institution has responded to the cuts with reductions in operating budgets, hiring and travel restrictions, some class reductions, project and purchasing slowdowns and the deferring of salary decisions. Thus far the institution has avoided large-scale employee layoffs while maintaining the academic integrity of programs.

In terms of tuition, President Boschini noted that, "Illinois State has a history of keeping the investment in higher education as affordable as possible, but this bleak state financial picture has left us with no realistic options other than to impose an additional tuition increase." In total, tuition for the 2002-2003 academic year will be 9.25 percent higher than last year. Under the increase, a student enrolled for 15 credit hours each semester will pay $4,857.10 in tuition and mandatory fees for the
2002-2003 academic year.

For more information on Illinois State's budget situation, Illinois State
Media Relations has provided a special web site just for budget news:

DOWNTOWN NORMAL RENOVATION
In another year or two, alumni returning to Normal and heading from campus down to Pub II or the Coffeehouse might be really surprised at what they find along the way!

Currently, the Town of Normal is working with professional consultants, businesses, citizens, and University officials to plan and implement a major renovation of the downtown area including Beaufort and North streets between Broadway and Linden. While alumni may understandably mourn the loss of a few long-time hangouts -- Rocky's (Josie's), Shanigan's (Chuck's Deli), and The Gallery -- future generations of students, parents, and visiting alumni can look forward to a downtown complete with a multi-modal transportation center including high-speed rail, a hotel/conference center, new shops and a museum. Other businesses will be encouraged to get "face lifts" to make downtown Normal as pleasant as possible.

For details, check out the Town of Normal Web site at www.normal.org and click on "Downtown Renewal Plan."

THE VIDETTE WANTS YOUR ALUMNI STORIES!
Eric Bieritz, the current editor of The Daily Vidette, has asked us to pass along the following request:

"The Daily Vidette, Illinois State University's student newspaper, invites Illinois State alumni to send entries of 550 words or less describing an experience or event during their time at ISU that was important or memorable. All entries will be considered and those chosen will appear in the Viewpoint section of the Vidette. Entries can deal with any aspect of a graduate's time in Bloomington-Normal, either academic, social, professional or otherwise. Entries should include the writer's name, graduating class year and a daytime phone number for confirmation. Entries can be sent via E-mail to (as text - no attachments) or mailed to:
Erick Bieritz, Editor in Chief
The Daily Vidette
Corner of University and Locust
Campus Box 0890
