Joseph Murphy ' 82 is a community leader whose service extends far beyond local boundaries. He was a founder of the international human rights campaign to free Taye Woldesmiate ' 82, M.S. ' 84, his former International House colleague, from unjust imprisonment in Ethiopia. He also played a key role in creating a discounted prescription drug program for the uninsured, launching an investigation of refinery operations by the Illinois Attorney General' s office, and repealing the Retail Rate Law that subsidized waste incineration. Locally he spearheaded the development of an antique district that led to downtown Blue Island' s economic resurgence. Murphy currently serves as a trustee for the Moraine Valley Community College. He was previously elected to the Blue Island Park Board and the High School District 218 School Board.
